Well I did get some questions about how the current portal plugin (and menu) acts with the new Kakumei themes. Well you don't have to change anything, except to add a few lines into the Kakumei template (see readme file). Note that you only have to do this in the basic Kakumei template file (header.php and style.css). No changes are needed for the Blue version of Kakumei. It will automaticly adapt the menu when you choose the blue one!

To demostrate, I have added the theme switcher plugin by _ck_, so you can switch between the green and blue Kakumei theme and see how it adapts.

In the near future I'll add some more skins. I am thinking to re-make/update the Aardvark theme so it uses the new gravatar option and other new functions bbPress has added over time. When this theme comes available, I'll add a theme's page to the site where you can see and download the theme you want.

Hi,

So it's 4 months since I've done anything with this plugin. So what did I do? I moved to a new appartment, graduated, got a job, got a girl, got a live (lol). All this took up a lot of time. I am thinking to start up the project soon. I already converted the plugin to use jQuery (which made the plugin 90% smaller in size!).

Also bbPress has evolved a lot since last time I checked. I am very curious to what they did and how things work now. So perhaps I'm going to finish the beta and release it in the near future (if time let me, since I am very busy at the moment).

Stay tuned!

... I have a real problem. I was converting the portal plugin to use the jQuery, but with the latest release, interface isn't compatible with it anymore! I did some digging and found out that interface it self isn't going to be updated anymore either. Instead of that, they have created jQuery UI.

That's some good news, if it wasn't that buggy. They say it's gonna be the official interface like plugin for jQuery, but to be honest, I think they released it too soon. It's still beta (though they say it isn't) and isn't as great as interface was (for now).

The down site is that I can't continue to convert bbPortal to jQuery at least untill UI works properly. So I am gonna concentrate on fixing some small bugs and add new stuff that doesn't requier jQuery or the old libary I am using right now.

Stay tuned!

bbPortal 1.3 has some several bug fixes and minor code improvements:

- bbPortal now uses the bb_admin_add_submenu hook
- Topics that are marked as spam or are "deleted" will no longer show up at the portal page
- Textfields in the admin area will now return a value (if there is one) instead of leaving the fields blank
- Merged bbPortal and the bbMenu plugin. It's no longer needed to have the bbMenu plugin installed

This is also the last version I release using the prototype libary. The next version will be jQuery based and smaller in size.

You can download bbPortal 1.3 here:
http://www.bbportal.org/bb-downloads/bbportal1.3.zip

I also get a lot of questions on how to add more menutabs to the bbMenu. To be short: you can't. This feature will be supported in the next version of bbMenu.

Since I am not a bad guy (and the next release can take a while), I've written a small plugin so you can add menu tabs. It is experimental, so read the read me text before using it!

You can download it here:
http://www.bbportal.org/bb-downloads/addmenutab1.0.zip

I am back!

and give you: bbMenu 1.2. bbMenu 1.2 has some several bug fixes and minor code improvements:

- bbMenu now uses the bb_admin_add_submenu hook
- Fixed a bug that caused bbMenu to crash on some servers (thanks box87)
- Some code cleanup and optimalisations (thanks box87)
- Some template changes. If bbMenu is deactivated, the header now adapts and wont crash

Note that bbMenu 1.2 is not compatible with bbPortal 1.2 and bbPress pre 0.8

This is also the last version I release using the prototype libary. The next version will be jQuery based and smaller in size.

You can download bbMenu 1.2 here:

Well it's almost done... This weekend I'll have to pick up my final stuff and move to my new home! After that (and IF my internet connection is moved allong with me) I can do some work on the portal plugin again. I am kinda excited to work on it again :)

bbPress has also released a new version, using jQuery. That's some good news too. This will allow bbPortal to do more with less. I've got some nice ideas, but the first thing to do is to convert the current drag & drop function to jQuery. If I get this done, there will be a new release.

But first things first... like getting my stuff to the new house :)

Well I have had some questions about the progress of the bbPortal project. I can assure you, it's NOT dead. The problem is that I currently am very busy with the real life.

I have a normal day job (9 till 5), also finishing school (last 5 days I was working on a 3D-max animation for school, till 02:00 hours in the morning, every day :() and on top of that, I also have to move soon...

So yeah, this project is pushed back a bit on my todo list ;)

Get it while it's hot!!!

Add your own menu to your bbPress forum, rename and re-order (drag & drop) the menu tabs to your liking.

New in this version:
- You can now rename the menu items by double-clicking them
- Fixed a minor $bb_table_prefix bug
- Added compatibility with the bbPortal plugin

Important:
Before installing, be sure to delete (drop) the previous
bb_menu table from you database

Known issues:
With FireFox: There are some problems when trying to edit the menu links in FF. Sometimes you can't edit the text in the textfield. Just try double clicking a text in the menu link, then double click another one and now try to edit the first one opened. If you know how to fix this issue, plz let me know

To do:
- Be able to add custom menu tabs to the menu using the admin panel
- re-write the plugin to use jQuery?? (This is used in the next bbPress version)

Download:
http://www.sourceskins.com/bbmenu1.1.zip

With this plugin released, I finally have the time to work on the bbPortal plugin again. bbMenu will be a requierd part in the next bbPortal version. More on this later!

bbPortal 1.1 is now available for download. Running this script for the first time will show an error message. Just ignore it. It just says there is no database table yet, but this will be created as soon as you press submit.

Other changes:
- Made bbPortal a plugin
- Added an admin menu for editing the portal page (admin/content/portal)
- Fixed a bbPress CSS bug that caused all <h1> and <h2> fontsizes to be different in every browser
- Changed how the portal's menu is placed (original #main in the style.css is put back again)
- Cause bbPortal is a plugin now, chances to the bb-includes/template-functions.php file are no longer needed.
You can put back the original bbPress template-functions.php file

Happy new year!

After a lot of trial and error, lots of frustration I give you:

bbMenu 1.0

What does it do?
It adds a menu to you bbPress site. You can edit the menu in the admin page (Content->Menu) by just drag & drop the menu items in the order you want.

Installation instructions and some documentation are included in the .zip

To do:
- Rename the menu items by doubble clicking them and then put in your desired name.
- Add an bbMenu_installed check so theme builders can make their theme's compatible for bbMenu aswell as for non bbMenu users. (It will check if the bbMenu is installed.) Ideas about how to do this are more then welcome!!!

Download it here:
http://www.sourceskins.com/bbmenu1.0.zip

The next version of bbPortal will require this plugin in order to work. I still have to tweak the bbMenu plugin a bit more, but when this is done I will start working on the next version of the bbPortal plugin. I can tell you this: it will have a very cool new feature!!!

Ow yeah, we have some Russian friends (http://www.bbpress.ru/) talking about the bbPortal plugin. How nice :D

Well some info about the developement of bbPortal 1.2 (yes it is comming :))

- Easy menu editing using drag & drop. I am going to release this as a seperate plugin first, so basic bbPress users can add a menu to their forums as well (more info on release).

- More dynamic frontpage. If you don't want to have a left or right sidebar, just delete it fromt the template. The page will auto ajust when it's missing a left or right sidebar. In the future, I want to add this option to the admin (so the user can deside if he wants to use the left or right sidebar and the template will then auto ajust to it).

This will also fix an Opera bug (I hope).

- Make bbPortal use the new bb_get_option function. (so the bbPortal SQL table can be removed).

- Some other bug fixes.... ???

Well this is it for now, still working on this, but this will give you guys an idea on what I am working on. The menu plugin is going to be released first (this or next week).

Good news, bbPress 0.74 has been released. I think bbPortal is compatible with this new version, but I haven't got the time to test this yet! With this 0.74 release, we can use some new functions like bb_get_options, which makes making plugins a lot easier. I think I am going to re-write the bbPortal plugin, so it will make use of these new functions. Perhaps it will resolve that small bug I've posted about at the same time!

Well get the new bbPress release at www.bbpress.org

Well funny thing, when you view the admin page (just viewing it, no updating), it will cause the frontpage to turn up empty. So the admin page empties the portal table when viewing it. Not sure how or why this happens, some help fixing this is appriciated!

No widgets and plugins yet, well in the future perhaps. I saw the widgets plugin from Wordpress and I am defeniately going to try to implement it into bbPortal. For plugins you'll have to be at the bbPress forum (www.bbpress.org). I don't think it's going to be a good idea to have some plugins here and some at bbPress, since bbPortal is a plugin for bbPress.

Widgets however arent in bbPress (and most likely wont be in it either), so those will be supported/ can be downloaded here.

Known bugs:

- Portal ID returns front-page ID

This is because in template-functions the

case 'portal.php' :
return 'front-page';
break;

returns the frontpage ID. Changing this to:

case 'portal.php' :
return 'portal-page';
break;

will result in messing up the looks of the portal index. Somewhere front-page and portal-page are in conflict or something...

- Add new link on portal page aint working in Opera
This is an Opera bug and is reported at the Opera forums.

- Comment link links to the last comment, not the first
Couldn't get this to work either. There is no standard function for this in bbPress and since my programming skills are below average, I have no idea how to fix this (yet). All help is welcome!

So, you have some suggestions and ideas? Well before posting them read ours first:

- Make bbPortal a plugin (no more manual core changes)
- Add an admin menu so we can config bbPortal (no more manual portal.php editing)
- Widgets (like in WP but slightly different)
- Better menu (dynamic)
- Add a read more function (so you are able to cut the text on the portal page)
- Fix bugs
- Add a RSS feed for the portal page (and not use 30 latests discussions)
- Add pages as plugins (like a FAQ, About or download page)

I must say, I am NO programming wonder, so all help is welcome!

Dear user,

This forum part is used to create a simpel FAQ for bbPortal. Since bbPress doesn't support forum restrictions yet, I ask you to NOT create any new topics in this part of the forum. Creating one will result in a PERMANENT BAN!

Lets keep this FAQ clean and enjoyable for all.

Thank you,

1) Download the .zip file
2) (Optional) modify or create a .htaccess file (see: http://www.bbportal.org/topic.php?id=8&replies=1)
3) Upload the files using the same map structure as in the .zip file
Note: If you don't want to overide any template files, you can also upload all the template files to your my-templates folder instead of the bb-templates one
4) Configure bbPortal (see: http://www.bbportal.org/topic.php?id=9&replies=1)
5) Surf to your website and refresh it
6) Done, that was easy wasn't it?

When upgrading from 1.0
Do the same as above, but also upload the original template-functions.php to your \bb-includes folder. Since bbPortal is a plugin, chances to the bb-includes/template-functions.php file are no longer needed.

If you have a clean bbPress install: Yes

If you did some code changes it would be wise to take a look into the files to see what is changed added. All changes are commented and aren't huge. You can also choose to install the template files into your my-templates folder instead of the bb-templates one.

There are several ways to do this:

Method 1: (for Apache server)
Create/ modify file .htaccess in bbPress root directory and add/edit this line:

DirectoryIndex index.html index.htm portal.php index.php

Method 2: (use META tag - if you cannot apply the 1st method)
Create file index.html in phpBB root directory (without #)

<html>
<head>
<title>Redirecting...</title>
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=portal.php">
</head>
<body>
</body>
</html>

If your bbPress was placed in a subdirectory to the webroot, like:
http://something.com/bbpress
you could create index.html in the webroot and modify the line 4 to
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=bbpress/portal.php">

Method 3: I think maybe you can find out method 3 yourself ;) like JavaScript, etc.

That's easy. You only have to add a few lines in the header.php and the css file. I've commented all the lines that are added, so take a look in these 2 files if you want to know what was changed/ added.
